eCommerce Developer in Chennai — OpenCart, PrestaShop, WooCommerce & Custom PHP
If you're looking for an eCommerce developer in Chennai, or hands-on eCommerce development across a specific platform, this page covers what that work actually involves and what it costs. I don't push one platform for every project — I build and support stores on OpenCart, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, and fully custom PHP, and I recommend whichever one actually fits your catalog, budget, and business logic. I'm an independent developer with 15+ years building PHP eCommerce applications — no account managers, no agency markup, just direct access to the person writing your code. I offer a free review of your first issue so you can see the quality of the work before committing to anything.
OpenCart vs. PrestaShop vs. WooCommerce vs. Custom PHP
An honest comparison — I don't have a reason to push one platform over another.

The kinds of stores I work on
Every industry needs something slightly different from its store, regardless of platform.
Retail & Fashion
Colour/size swatches, live inventory counts, fast image zoom, and a checkout that holds up under the traffic spikes shops in Anna Nagar and Velachery see during sale season.
Electronics & Furniture
Product attribute groups for specs and variants, pricing that scales with size or configuration, and filter search that actually narrows results.
Jewellery & Luxury
Real-time pricing add-ons, extra checks before a high-value order goes through, and product pages built to a showroom-quality visual standard.
Pharmacy & Healthcare
Secure prescription uploads, access controls on sensitive customer data, expiry-date tracking on stock, and inventory that stays in sync in real time.
B2B & Wholesale
Custom pricing tiers per client, bulk-quantity discounts, GST-ready invoicing, and warehouse/logistics data feeds for manufacturing businesses around Ambattur and Avadi.
Food & Export
Weight-based pricing calculations, delivery-window selection at checkout, and multi-currency setups for brands shipping internationally.
Why eCommerce stores actually break
Most of my work is stepping into a store another developer or agency left half-fixed. These are the four causes I see most often, across all four platforms.
1. Two extensions fighting over the same checkout hook
Whether it's two OpenCart extensions editing the same controller, two PrestaShop modules hooking into the same checkout step, or two WooCommerce plugins competing for the cart action, the pattern is the same — the conflict often fails silently, and checkout breaks for customers while the admin dashboard looks fine. I trace this by going through logs and the active extension list directly, rather than reinstalling everything and hoping the problem goes away.
2. A host forces a PHP version upgrade
GoDaddy, Hostinger, and similar hosts periodically push PHP upgrades for compliance reasons, without asking. Older store installs and their extensions often weren't written for the stricter newer PHP, so you get a blank page or a 500 error overnight with no warning. I go through the codebase and fix the compatibility issues directly, so you don't have to rebuild the store just because the host changed something.
3. The catalog outgrows the original database setup
Once a catalog passes a few thousand products, unindexed queries and bloated log or session tables start showing up as real page-load delays — sometimes 6-12 seconds on mobile. I fix this by optimising the slow queries, adding missing indexes, and setting up proper caching so the same lookups aren't repeated on every page view.
4. Payment goes through but the order doesn't show up
If a customer pays but the order never appears in your admin, the webhook call from the payment gateway is usually failing quietly — often an SSL certificate issue, a wrong callback URL, or a security plugin blocking the request. I fix this by checking server headers directly and tracing exactly where the call is failing, for gateways like Razorpay and PayU.
Types of eCommerce work I take on
Most projects fall into one of these categories, regardless of platform.
Store Setup
Clean installs built the right way from day one — proper folder permissions, a sensible checkout flow, and no shortcuts that cause problems later.
Custom Extensions, Modules & Plugins
Built to each platform's own structure — OpenCart's MVC-L, PrestaShop's hook system, WooCommerce's action/filter hooks — so they survive future updates.
Platform Migrations
Moving a store between OpenCart, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, or into custom PHP, without losing customer orders, product data, or search rankings.
ERP & Third-Party Integrations
Connecting your store to warehouse systems, SAP, inventory tools, or logistics platforms with a working, maintained sync.
Payment & Shipping Integrations
Razorpay, PayU, and Instamojo set up properly, plus multi-carrier shipping lookups through Shiprocket and Delhivery.
Speed & Performance
Getting your store to actually pass Google's Core Web Vitals — server caching, image compression, and database cleanup, not just a plugin.
A quick summary of how I work
You're hiring one developer, not a layer of account managers.
15+ years in production
I've spent fifteen-plus years working inside real PHP eCommerce deployments across multiple platforms. Most bugs that stall a support ticket for days, I can usually spot in minutes because I've seen the pattern before.
No hidden subcontracting
Agencies often sell you a senior consultant and hand the actual coding to a junior. I write every line of your project myself.
₹350/hour, AI-assisted
I use AI tooling for routine boilerplate, testing, and documentation. That keeps billed hours — and your cost — down without cutting corners on the actual engineering.
Platform-agnostic advice
I don't have a single platform to push, so my recommendation is based on your catalog and budget, not which extension marketplace pays better.
Me vs. a typical agency
A straightforward comparison, for what it's worth coming from me.
Sample project costs
AI-assisted tooling cuts down the hours I need to bill for routine work, and that saving passes to you.
| Task | Typical Agency Time | My Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout / gateway bug fix | 2 – 4 hours | 1 hour | ₹350 flat |
| Custom extension / module / plugin build | 8 – 12 hours | 3 – 4 hours | ₹1,050 – ₹1,400 |
| Platform migration | 24 – 36 hours | 8 – 12 hours | ₹2,800 – ₹4,200 |
| Full store build from scratch | 32 – 48 hours | 10 – 14 hours | ₹3,500 – ₹4,900 |
Note: These are typical ranges, not quotes, and apply across all four platforms. You'll get an exact estimate after a free review of your store's extensions, hosting limits, and customization history.
How the process works
No bureaucracy — just these six steps, in order.
Message on WhatsApp
Send details, links, or error logs. You'll get a real technical response, not a sales pitch.
Free review
I check your admin settings, error logs, and installed extensions to find the actual cause before quoting anything.
Fixed estimate
You get a fixed price or a clear hourly estimate before I touch any code.
Build the fix
Changes are written as proper isolated extensions where possible, so they survive future updates.
Test it properly
Checkout flow, mobile display, and load under realistic conditions — checked before anything ships.
Deploy safely
Changes go live during your lowest-traffic window, with a full backup taken first.
What I actually do on each platform
"eCommerce developer" covers a lot of ground — here's the specific work on each one.
OpenCart. Custom extension development following its MVC-L structure, version upgrades and migrations across 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x, and Journal/Poco theme customisation. Good fit for straightforward catalogs that need to launch fast on lighter hosting.
PrestaShop. Custom module development on its hook system, multi-store and B2B feature configuration, and theme customisation using its Smarty templating. Good fit for larger, more complex catalogs that need strong features out of the box.
WooCommerce. Store builds on WordPress with Kadence or a custom theme, custom plugin development using WordPress's hook system, and Core Web Vitals tuning for plugin-heavy stores. Good fit for businesses already investing in WordPress content and SEO.
Custom PHP. Fully bespoke store logic — often on Laravel — for businesses with pricing, approval, or inventory rules that don't map cleanly onto any off-the-shelf platform's data model. More upfront cost, but no fighting a platform's assumptions later.
Speed tuning & Core Web Vitals
A slow store loses sales. Here's what actually moves the needle, beyond installing a caching plugin — on any platform.
Core Web Vitals. Removing render-blocking scripts, deferring tracking tags that aren't needed immediately, and setting explicit image dimensions — the specific things Google's LCP and INP metrics actually measure.
Server-side caching. Caching expensive database query results so the platform isn't re-running the same lookups every time someone loads a popular category page.
Image compression. Converting product images to .webp, setting up lazy loading, and serving properly sized images instead of full-resolution files scaled down in the browser.
Database cleanup. Clearing old session logs, archiving stale search data, and indexing the tables that actually get queried on every page load.
An eCommerce developer in your timezone — and your city
Being based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu means we work in the same hours. When checkout breaks during your morning sales rush, you get a reply in minutes — not a response from an outsourced queue the next day.
I work with stores across Anna Nagar, Velachery, Adyar, Guindy, Ambattur, Porur, and OMR, and I'm familiar with the Indian payment gateways and delivery services most Chennai stores actually integrate with.
I'm also available across Tambaram, Avadi, Chromepet, Perambur, KK Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Sholinganallur, and Medavakkam — and remotely for businesses in the Middle East, Europe, and the US, entirely over WhatsApp and email.
